January's Featured Artists
Peter Asselyn Artisan Wood Turning
“I have been working with wood all my life building houses with my dad since I could walk. After a career in the Air Force I started out on a small lathe that my dad had given to me. Six years and three lathes later I discovered my passion. I have fallen in love with Cherry Burl. The rich color and texture of the wood and all the voids in the burl let my imagination fly like an eagle in an updraft. I will always remember, however to give credit where it is due. Mother Nature is the artist, I am only the acolyte.” |
Jo Diggs Quilted Appliqué
Jo was educated at Wellesley and Harvard (a master’s in teaching), with a detour in the ’60s to New Mexico, where she first discovered the intricate reverse appliqué work—called mola—of the Kuna Indians of Panama. “I wanted to expand on doing single landscapes to make them more contemporary, more artistic, more evolved visually. The point is to have a landscape start in one place, and then morph. When I’m teaching a method of assembling landscapes, I’m teaching color, depth, and distance; shapes, balance, and rhythm. In the quilt world, we call them art quilts.” -As seen in Yankee Magazine |
Sam Lawrence Vibrant Glass Creations
Sam began working with glass as a senior in high school. After seeing a glass blowing demonstration in Venice, Italy and knew that’s what he wanted to study. He immediately took a bead making course and was instantly hooked. Sam went to art school with the intention of focusing on glass blowing. When he had just started his sophomore year, he sustained a traumatic brain injury in a skateboarding accident. He was in a coma for 4 weeks and spent many months focusing on his rehabilitation. Through Sam’s persistence and determination he was able to physically return to his torch where he continues to make beautiful art. |
