Susan Perrine
Community has been central to Woolwich resident, Susan Perrine. From her 4th floor Front Street studio, she developed and facilitated Banners Over Bath, through the Main Street Bath’s Design Committee in 2004-07. She co-chaired Pecha Kucha events at Frontier Cafe in Brunswick and worked for two years to promote and fundraise for a community built playground in Jamestown, RI.
At her sons’ schools Susan provided numerous fiber art activities. In Rhode Island, she joined the Watson Farm Sheep to Shawl Team, bringing two ewes, their twin lambs, a spinning wheel and loom into schools each February to demonstrate how fabric is created. These events inspired her to develop large collaborative projects so students could become actively involved. The Human Loom allowed 250 elementary school students and teachers to weave a 200 square foot patterned fabric. Circular or tunnel shaped Twig Garden Structures are up to 30 feet long. Several dozen have been installed in parks and public institutions throughout the North East. Susan learned to weave during an apprenticeship to Carol Schwartzott, who’s work was exhibited in major galleries. Current work ranges from cut and stitched paper images to hand weaving and dying wearables to weaving large enclosures out of twigs and transforming recycled plastic wrappings into wearable art. Susan’s twig lamps and a 7 foot tall woven structure are currently featured in the window of Markings Gallery. |
